Mapping human influences on the uplands and mountains of Scotland

Not all the sites I visit are in the uplands. One of our local standing stones.

As well as the natural history of the uplands and mountains, which I have provided some resources for on the blog before (see here ), working as an outdoor leader requires some knowledge of human activities and traces in the uplands and mountains of the British .

My other work as an Earth Scientist and jobbing birder often requires me to build up a picture of landuse and traces of human activity across a range of sites. My usual place of work is in Scotland, so the sources compiled here are focused on Scotland. Other countries in the British Isles have their own agencies and online resources.

A particularly exciting development has been the work, brought about by the merger of Historic Scotland and the RCAHMS into Historic Environment Scotland, to merge all of the databases held by these two organizations into a single map-driven search tool called Past Map.
